A $40,000 DANCE

Six Tennessee Titans are being fined $40,000 for their part in a celebratory dance they did in the end zone after scoring a TD against the Miami Dolphins. (The Tennessean, 11/14/03, p 1c.)  Their behavior violated an NFL rule against "excessive, premeditated celebrating."  Even multimillionaire athletes hate to have $5,000 - $10,000 taken from their paychecks.  Dancing can be costly.

The dancing of Herodias' daughter cost John his head. (Matthew 14:1-12)  This tragic incident reminds us that dancing can lead to people losing their heads in more ways than one.  John lost his literally because Herod lost his rationally because of dulled senses due to watching his stepdaughter dance.

Dancing costs many young women their purity.  A survey of prostitutes done several years ago revealed that a large number of them believed their moral demise began on the dance floor.  Dancing has been described as "supervised petting",  which is another word for the foreplay preceding overt sexual activity.

Dancing costs a young man his honor.  Some men have admitted that a primary purpose of the dance is the seduction of their partner.  Such behavior is neither honorable nor honest.

Dancing costs the Christian his influence.  Dancing dims the light of Christian influence. (Matthew 5:13-16.)  Someone has said that a dancing foot and a praying knee does not belong on the same leg.  It is hard to imagine a serious conversation about spiritual matters occurring on the dance floor.

Dancing costs souls.  At least three works of the flesh include dancing (lasciviousness, revelings, and such like). (See Galatians 5:19-21.)  "They which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God."

    Yes, dancing is costly!
