WOULD YOU BE A FOOTSTOOL? Water fountains draw kids. They love to see the water spurt out. They seem to enjoy having it spray their face and body parts before they watch it gurgle down the drain. They like the challenge of trying to capture some of it before it escapes. It's difficult, if not impossible, for the little ones to drink from even the lower fountains without a boost. Two of our youngsters, Madison and Grant Lollar, (ages siz and three, respectively), recently came up with a brilliant solution. He wanted a drink of water, but could not reach high enough even on his tiptoes. So she, of her own accord, dropped to her hands and knees in front of the water fountain and made herself a "footstool". At her bidding he climbed on her back, stood up, and got a drink of water. What a lesson!!! We are not supposed to make "footstools" out of others. (See James 2:3.) But are we willing to make ourselves a "footstool" for the good of other people? Wouldn't the world and the church be better places if everyone helped others climb higher? Jesus said, "And whoseover shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water..., he shall in no wise lose his reward." (Matthew 10:42.) The simplest of gestures when done in the spirit of Christ brings great rewards. Jesus also said, "Whoseover will be great among you, let him be your minister; and whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: even as the Son of man..." (Matthew 20:26-28.) Service is the pavement on the road to greatness. The way up is down! 'Tis better to be a footstool than a stumbling block! Edward L. Anderson
