THE PUREST OF THE PATRIARCHS Joseph, the son of Jacob, could be described by the above caption. He was a good boy who became a great man. In the face of severe temptation he displayed remarkable character, understanding, and self-control. (See Genesis 39.) He seemed to know the wise words of Solomon before they were penned: "My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not." (Prov. 1:10.) Genesis 39 reveals at least four things understood by Joseph. (1) He understood his responsibility. Joseph took his duties seriously. Though given great authority by his master, he understood and respected the limits and boundaries set in place by a higher Authority. A failure to act responsibly has wrecked many marriages and lives. (2) He understood the sanctity of marriage. He knew certain things were wrong "because you are his wife." Society would do well to remember and embrace the original marriage decree. (Gen. 2:21-24; Matt. 19: 3-9.) Joseph knew this principle and applied it even in a strange country. In so doing he kept himself pure for his future marriage. (3) He understood the "great wickedness" of adultery. Many accept this and other improper sexual situations as normal and just another alternative lifestyle. Fornication "is reported commonly" in today's world. (See 1 Cor. 5:1.) But adultery and fornication are still condemned in God's inspired "catalogs" of sin. And, unless repented of and forgiven, they will keep one out of heaven, even in an "enlightened" and uninhibited age. (See Rom. 1:29; 1 Cor. 6: 9-10; Gal. 5:19-21.) (4) He understood that sin is "against God. "This shows the seriousness of sin. Joseph knew adultery involved much more than merely offending one's earthly master. This sin, as well as all other sin, is a terrible insult to the goodness of a merciful and benevolent God. "Keep thyself pure" is still good advice. (1 Tim. 5:22.) Edward L. Anderson
