"SINDROME" Webster defines "syndrome" as a group of signs and symptoms that occur together and characterize a particular abnormality. All kinds of symptoms have been diagnosed and treated by the medical community. If you have not been so diagnosed, you probably know someone who has. If you were to change the "y" to "I", you would have identified the most common, as well as the most dangerous malady of man. This is well documented in the sacred Scriptures. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23) "For the wages of sin are death..." (Romans 6:23) Consider some of the signs and symptoms of SS (Sin Syndrome). (1) Inordinate Desire for the Fleshly and Sensual. Romans 1 furnishes a very up-to-date divine commentary on this symptom. The list of sins reads likes today's paper! "Vile affections" (v.26), "burned in their lust" (v. 27), and "being filled with all unrighteousness" (v. 29), are but a few of the statements revealing a horrible level of depravity. "The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness..." (v.18) (2) Extreme Discomfort with the Spiritual. Those rollicking in sin do not relish spiritual things. Their appetite for that which is spiritual has been dulled. Sin has a desensitizing effect. Those suffering from SS do not enjoy being involved in spiritual exercises such as worship, prayer, and Bible study. They will avoid spiritual people when possible. They even dislike God. (See Romans 1:28, 30.) (3) Dislike, even Disdain, for Authority. Those who suffer from SS seek to throw off any authoritative yoke. They want no restraint. They desire to do their own thing, or, as in the days of the judges of Israel, "what is right in their own eyes." The sinner's attitude toward authority is easily seen in the definition of sin itself: "Sin is the transgression of the law." (I John 3:4) Authority is inherent in law. Sin is a slap in the face of God's authority. Submission to the Great Physician is the only cure for the "sickness" of sin! Edward L. Anderson
