SMELLEVISION

A new phenomenon being developed at Disney World in Orlando, Florida is called "smellevision."  The image of food (apple pie, for instance), is projected from the screen in 3-D along with the corresponding smell.  You get the picture and the aroma.  The smell which used to come from the kitchen may now come from the TV!

My initial response to this bit of news was to question whether it would apply to programs as well as commercials.  I can see where smell would help sell some products.  But television has really been "smellevision" for several years now, maybe even decades, so far as programming is concerned.

The "smell" coming from much of the present television programming is offensive to anyone with a desire for the decent.  There are some worthwhile programs - religious, news, historical, old reruns, etc.  The tendency, however, is clearly toward the coarse, obscene, and vulgar.

There is the "smell" of disregard for true family values.  Ozzie and Harriet have given way to Ozzy Osbourne.  The match-making millionaire shows are an insult to God-ordained matrimony.  (Hebrews 13:5.)

There is the "smell" of contempt for righteous relationships.  Adultery, homosexuality, and incest are portrayed and promoted as normal.  How many TV couples have one man and one woman living together faithfully as husband and wife for fifty or sixty years?

There is the "smell" of disdain for decency - in speech, dress, and behavior.  Profanity is very common.  The occasional four-lettered word of yesteryear has multiplied many times over.  Dress (or undress) has become increasingly bold and daring.  Savage and bestial behavior is depicted as routine and normal.

If this new development were to be true and accurate in its application, maybe some would change their viewing habits or just turn the set off and pursue more family-friendly entertainment.  For, after all, garbage stinks!
